William Q and A

1. How would you describe your style of law/practice or your approach to dealing with clients?
Focused on clients’ actual needs, endeavouring to see their problems through their eyes. Friendly and approachable and helping to demystify the law for clients. Strong general practice with a particular focus on commercial property and Trust work. Endeavouring to take care of the legal aspects of a client’s personal and business affairs.

2. If you had a single piece of advice to give a person in relation to property transactions what would it be?
Always be aware – each transaction is unique and holds its own challenges.

3. What has had the biggest impact on how you practice law over recent years?
Technology – the ability to communicate instantly – speeds the transactional times for assignments.

4. When you are not being a lawyer what do you like doing most?
I enjoy playing golf, watching rugby and cricket, dining out and travel.

5. Who gave you the best piece of advice in relation to your legal career and what was it?
As a young solicitor in a large central Wellington practice, being advised by the Senior Partner that “the client is always right even when the client is wrong”. It stressed to me the importance of building a rapport with clients and understanding their point of view – to be a good listener – to analyse before giving sound, practical and independent advice.

6. What is your favourite quote?
“It’s the getting it right that counts”.

7. What would you be doing if you weren’t a lawyer?
I have always thought that I would enjoy being a teacher.
