Samuel Q and A

1. How would you describe your style of law/practice or your approach to dealing with clients?

I like to be always available and assist with practical solutions to get the right result.

2. If you had a single piece of advice to give a person in relation to buying or selling a business what would it be?

Make sure you get a strong team around you and take all the advice you can. That could be from a business mentor, accountant, insurance advisor, bank and of course your lawyer before signing an agreement.

3. What has had the biggest impact on how you practice law over recent years?

Spending time in a law firm in Ireland and starting my career in provincial New Zealand (Queenstown). The changes with technology has also had a huge impact.

4. When you are not being a lawyer what do you like doing most?

Playing sport, whether it be competitive club rugby on a Saturday or social sports during the week with friends. Also travelling and enjoying good food and wine with friends.

5. Who gave you the best piece of advice in relation to your legal career and what was it?

Mark Hennagen – Dean of Law, Otago University: encouragement to work in an industry, construction etc and meet people from all walks of life rather than working in a big law firm while studying. I learnt far more from doing this and gained invaluable skills.

6. What is your Favourite quote.

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” — Wayne Gretzky

7. What would you be doing if you weren’t a lawyer?

Sports Journalist or working in the food industry
